Alcon, a leading eyecare company, has introduced a new category of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens , AcrySof IQ Vivity. The lens provides a full range of vision and a monofocal-like visual disturbance profile.
Vivity offers high quality distance and intermediate vision and functional near vision. In addition, it virtually eliminates the visual disturbances associated with other models of intraocular lenses. In this sense, it is an excellent solution for cataract patients.
Blurred vision is the main symptom of people with cataract, in addition to difficulty seeing clearly at night, and halos of light. According to Dr. Mercè Guarro MirallesOMIQ’s renowned specialist in complex cataract surgery, “I am very satisfied with the quality of our work.Vivity provides high visual quality in both distance and functional near vision without the visual disturbances and contrast sensitivity penalties associated with other types of lenses.”.
For Dr. Guarro, one of the most knowledgeable Spanish ophthalmologists in this type of lenses, “Vivity not only restores vision to cataract patients who have lost their vision, but also restores good functional distance, intermediate and near vision, making it possible to dispense with glasses for most of the tasks of daily life.“.
Non-diffractive design
Vivity is the first lens in its class to provide a full range of vision. It uses an innovative non-diffractive design, called X-WAVE technology, which reduces the dependence on glasses in cataract patients and the level of visual interference. This provides functional vision both from a distance and for viewing a computer, tablet or cell phone.
This novel Alcon technology uses two transition elements on the anterior surface of the intraocular lens that work synergistically to create an extended continuous focal range. Thus, Vivity offers a very good quality of vision at long and medium distances, under photopic and mesopic conditions.
Ninety-four percent of patients reported good or very good distance vision, and 92% good or very good intermediate distance vision. In addition, Vivity patients reported very low levels of halos and flares, revealing a visual discomfort profile with Vivity like that of single vision lenses. Available in spherical and toric versions, Vivity is manufactured on the AcrySof IQ platform, a lens that has been implanted in more than 120 million eyes worldwide.
Cataract is the most common age-related eye disease and the leading cause of preventable blindness. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures, being the first treatment option for 85% of patients. The World Health Organization estimates that by the year 2020, more than 32 million cataract surgeries will be performed worldwide each year.
