What are tumours of the conjunctiva?
They are a series of tumours that appear in the white mucous membrane that covers the eye, from the limbus (edge of the cornea) to the conjunctival cul-de-sac.
Most conjunctival tumours are benign. However, they can be malignant, and endowed with pigment, or not. Some of these tumours can endanger the patient’s vision, so it is convenient to diagnose and treat them early.
Why do tumors of the conjunctiva occur?
The environment is one of the main determinants in the appearance of conjunctival tumours: it has been seen that some of these tumours are related to excessive sun exposure. In addition, certain viruses such as human papillomavirus or hiv are linked to squamous-type tumours. Other tumours, such as pigmented (melanocytic) tumours, are associated with tobacco use.
How are tumors of the conjunctiva manifested?
The general symptoms in tumours of the conjunctiva are foreign body sensation, red eye or tearing. However, most conjunctival tumours manifest as a raised or damaged area of change in texture or colour on the conjunctiva.
Some tumours, especially those located in places where they go unnoticed, can increase in size and produce symptoms such as eye irritation and discomfort.
Treatment of tumours of the conjunctiva
The treatment of conjunctival tumours depends on the size, the histological type (the cells that compose it) and its location:
Generally, benign tumours will be observed periodically and will not require treatment if they do not cause bothersome symptoms. On the other hand, malignant ones are treated surgically or by cryotherapy, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Conjunctiva tumor prevention
Avoid risk factors that favour its appearance, such as tobacco, sun exposure (sunglasses) or treatment of viral infections.
It is important to perform periodic ophthalmological examinations in the presence of a lesion, since despite the fact that most conjunctival tumours are benign, some can lead to a malignant lesion.
Summary
Debut
Variable.
Symptoms
Eye irritation, foreign body sensation or lump in the conjunctiva.
Revision
It is important to perform periodic ophthalmological examinations in the presence of a lesion, since despite the fact that most conjunctival tumours are benign, some can lead to a malignant lesion.
Prevention
Avoid triggering risk factors (tobacco, viruses, sun exposure).
