Dr. Mercè Guarro obtained her medical degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona Faculty of Medicine in 1988. She specialized in Ophthalmology in 1993, her areas of interest being complex cataract surgery and glaucoma. She completed a fellowship in cataract surgery with J. L. Pearce in the UK. Involved in the planning of ophthalmology in an area of 500,000 inhabitants of Barcelona, she designed and implemented one of the first screening programs for diabetic retinopathy in the Barcelona area.
She has been the principal investigator in many research trials of glaucoma and cataract surgery. Currently, she acts as Surgeon Consultant with special interest in cases of surgery of complex cataract and anterior segment reconstruction. She is also head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Hospital de Granollers and OMIQ.
